MPAC Assessments Too High?

In 2012 many area owners contacted the BIA surprised at the large increase in the assessed value of their property.  And they noted that the increase came with no improved or new services from the City.

In response the BIA has undertaken a study of assessment related information in particular compiling an inventory of recent property sale values –  a core metric for MPAC – in the Corridor and comparable areas in urban Ottawa and adjacent municipalities like Arnprior and Carleton Place.  Also we have learned of the experience of some members who have successfully appealed their assessment to a lower value.

Analysis of property sale data and the success record of those who appealed their 2012 assessment suggests that in 2012 MPAC overvalued property in the Corridor – resulting in overtaxing of property in the Corridor.

The 2016 assessments will be sent to owners in October.  Between now and then the BIA is working with a tax consultant to consolidate information and investigate the feasibility of an area wide adjustment.  If you would like to be included in an area wide readjustment investigation and appeal process please contact the BIA.  A successful process, either individually or as an area wide adjustment, may reduce taxes and may even provide a credit if there has been overpayment.
